Background of the Publication Manual

In 1929, the American Psychological Association (APA) published an article outlining its recommended form for manuscripts submitted to psychological journals. The actual title Publication Manual was first used in 1952. The fifth edition (2001) defines the standard for articles published in more than one thousand journals in psychology, the behavioral sciences, nursing, and personnel administration. According to the APA, their website at www.apastyle.org provides updates on changes affecting style, policies, and procedures.
